Wollongong City SES Geared up for Storm Season
Aug 21, 2006
Author:

For the Wollongong City State Emergency Service, August marks the start of storm season. This is a time of the year where weather conditions can produce both rain and windstorms that can have serious impact on the community.
The spring months have in previous years have meant an increase in callouts for Wollongong City SES. These range from small events involving only a hand full of requests for assistance from the public, right up to more sizable events involving hundreds like the Windstorm in October 2004.
This year will be no different to previous years, with highly skilled volunteers ready to respond to the needs of the Illawarra. Our response this year will be made easier with the Unit receiving a new heavy response truck, new flood boat and mobile communications caravan earlier in the month from Wollongong City Council.
“The storm season this year began with our first requests for assistance from the public on Wednesday in the late afternoon.” commented Graham Rehier, Local Controller. “As at all times throughout the year, the Unit is prepared for to respond to the needs of the community. This is a result of a high standard of training and good morale amongst out volunteers.”
With a significant amount of time left in the storm season, it is a good time for all property owners and dwellers to conduct the following:

Trim tree branches well clear of your house.
Make sure your family emergency kit is ready.
Keep your yard clear of loose objects (such as toys, bicycles and lawn furniture).
Clean and check the roof, guttering and downpipes.
Inspect roof and gutters for damage

By completing the above checks and maintenance, it can significantly reduce the likelihood of damage to your house or property by severe storms.
