SES Volunteers spend Sunday Afternoon on Callouts
May 9, 2006
Author:

Wollongong City SES Volunteers responded to two requests for assistance from the public early yesterday evening. The two tasks were a result of tree damage to property. Seven volunteers responded to the calls outs.
The North Wollongong Hotel was the scene of one of these callouts in which a tree had fallen into the car park. Four cars were damaged from the fall. It took our volunteers over three hours to remove the tree from the cars and to make the area safe.
“The crew that responded to The North Wollongong Hotel took the situation in hand and completed the task in a professional and prompt manner”, commented Local Controller Graham Reiher. “The training that we provide our members is of a high quality and teaches them to think about what is required of the situation.”
This event demonstrates that houses and property are not the only thing that can be damaged as a result of a windstorm. The SES would like to remind people that when driving during a windstorm that trees, bins and power lines are just some of the extra hazards that may be present on the road so slow down and drive to the conditions.
In times of need during windstorms you can contact your local State Emergency Service on 132 500.
